Area Info | bio: | When
I was first introduced to the art of basket making in 1984, I immediately
fell in love with this age-old craft and have been weaving ever since. My
material of choice is reed which is cut from cane palm, a fast-growing,
vine-like plant which grows in the jungles and rain forests of Indonesia
and Malaysia. Its strength, flexibility, and uniformity make it
an ideal material for basket making. I raised five children, so
I like “control” - and reed gives me that! I also
incorporate wood splints, mostly maple, and other natural materials into
my work. Most of my baskets begin as traditional shapes into which
I weave something of myself, with my primary emphases being shape, color,
and texture. I sell my work at juried art fairs throughout the upper Midwest and have won several awards for my baskets. I also teach basket making in my studio and for guilds and art centers, including the Headwaters Basket Maker’s Guild in Bemidji, the Minnesota Weaver’s Guild at the Textile Center at the University of Minnesota, the Lakes Art Center in Okoboji, IA, and at the Pottery Workshop in New London. I am currently the president of WAAC and am thrilled to be able to participate in Studio Hop again this year. |
